Understanding how your IELTS band score is calculated helps you set realistic targets, identify where to focus your preparation, and interpret your results accurately. Here's a complete breakdown.

Scoring System

IELTS scores range from 0 to 9, with half-band increments (e.g. 6.5, 7.5). Each of the four skills receives its own band score. These are averaged to produce your Overall Band Score. There is no negative marking — every correct answer counts.

Listening

The Listening section has 40 questions, each worth one mark. Your raw score (out of 40) is converted to a band score using an official conversion table. Higher raw scores are required for higher bands.

Reading

Like Listening, the Reading section has 40 questions worth one mark each. However, there are two separate conversion tables — one for General Training and one for Academic — because the difficulty levels differ.

Writing

The Writing section is marked by trained IELTS examiners on four criteria:

  • Task Achievement / Task Response
  • Coherence and Cohesion
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Each criterion is scored from 0 to 9, and the scores are averaged to produce your Writing band.

Speaking

The Speaking section is also assessed by a trained examiner across four criteria:

  • Fluency and Coherence
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  • Pronunciation

Each is scored from 0 to 9 and averaged for your final Speaking band.

Overall Scoring

Your Overall Band Score is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

Rounding rules:

  • 5.2 rounds down to 5
  • 5.8 rounds up to 6
  • 6.7 rounds up to 7
  • 7.3 rounds up to 7.5

For example, if your scores are Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.5 — your average is 6.5 and your Overall Band Score is 6.5.

Now that you know how scoring works, use it to set section-specific targets and direct your preparation where it matters most.
