IELTS comes in two versions — Academic and General Training. Many test-takers are unsure which to choose, and choosing the wrong one can mean your score is not accepted for your intended purpose. This guide settles the question definitively.
The Key Difference in One Sentence
Academic tests your ability to understand and use academic English for university study. General Training tests your ability to use everyday English for work and life in an English-speaking environment.
What Is Different Between the Two Tests
| Section | IELTS Academic | IELTS General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Identical | Identical |
| Speaking | Identical | Identical |
| Reading | 3 long academic passages from books, journals, newspapers | 3 shorter sections: notices, advertisements, workplace documents + one longer passage |
| Writing Task 1 | Describe a graph, chart, table, or diagram | Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) |
| Writing Task 2 | Essay responding to an academic question | Essay — same format as Academic |
The sections that differ: Only Reading and Writing Task 1.
Which Is Harder?
IELTS Academic is generally considered harder — the Reading passages are dense academic texts, and Writing Task 1 (graph description) requires specific skills that many people find challenging.
IELTS General Training has more accessible reading texts and a letter-writing task that most people find more natural than data description.
However, the scoring is adjusted — General Training and Academic scores are calibrated to be equivalent. A Band 7 in General Training represents the same level of English ability as a Band 7 in Academic.
When to Take IELTS Academic
Take IELTS Academic if you need scores for:
| Purpose | IELTS Version |
|---|---|
| University admission (undergraduate, master's, PhD) | Academic |
| UK Student Route visa | Academic (UKVI approved) |
| NMC nursing registration (UK) | Academic |
| AHPRA/NMBA medical and nursing registration (Australia) | Academic |
| AITSL teacher registration (Australia) | Academic |
| GMC doctor registration (UK) | Academic |
| Most professional registration bodies | Academic |
If in doubt: Take IELTS Academic. It is the more widely applicable version.
When to Take IELTS General Training
Take IELTS General Training if you need scores for:
| Purpose | IELTS Version |
|---|---|
| Canada immigration (Express Entry, study permit) | Either (General Training accepted) |
| Australia immigration (skilled migration, partner visa) | Either (General Training accepted) |
| New Zealand immigration | Either |
| UK Skilled Worker Visa (not Student) | General Training (UKVI) |
| Secondary school entry in Canada/Australia | General Training |
Important: Even for these purposes, Academic is always also accepted. General Training is an alternative — not the only option.
Can You Use General Training for University?
No. Almost all universities globally require IELTS Academic specifically. IELTS General Training is not accepted for academic admissions at universities, regardless of your General Training score.
IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 — Letters
Instead of describing a graph, you write a letter (150 words, 20 minutes):
| Letter Type | Tone |
|---|---|
| Formal | To a company, government office, unknown person |
| Semi-formal | To a manager, landlord, or known but formal contact |
| Informal | To a friend or family member |
The letter type is stated in the question. Using the wrong tone (writing informally when a formal letter is required) significantly lowers your score.
Summary: Quick Decision Guide
| Your Situation | Take |
|---|---|
| Applying to any university | Academic |
| UK or Australian professional registration | Academic |
| Canada immigration only (no university) | General Training |
| Australia skilled migration only | General Training |
| Both immigration AND university | Academic (covers both) |
| Unsure | Academic |
