What makes Academic different

Inside the IELTS™ Academic Test

IELTS Academic is the version universities and professional bodies ask for. Listening and Speaking are the same as in General Training. Reading and Writing are not, and that is where Academic candidates most often lose marks.

Writing Task 1: graphs, charts and diagrams

You are shown visual information, such as a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, map or process diagram, and must describe it in your own words in at least 150 words, in about 20 minutes. You do not give an opinion. The skill is selecting the main trends, comparing the key figures and writing a clear overview. Most students have never practised this before they start preparing, which makes it the task where focused practice pays off fastest.

Writing Task 2: the academic essay

You respond to a point of view, argument or problem in at least 250 words, in about 40 minutes. Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1 in your Writing band, so time management matters: spending too long on the graph is one of the most common ways to lose marks on the essay.

Academic Reading: three long texts

You answer 40 questions in 60 minutes on three long passages taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. The texts are written for a general audience but are dense and academic in style. Question types include matching headings, True/False/Not Given, sentence completion and summary completion, and there is no extra time to transfer answers.

Listening and Speaking

Listening has four parts and 40 questions in about 30 minutes, moving from everyday conversations to an academic talk. Speaking is a three-part interview with an examiner lasting 11 to 14 minutes. Both are the same for Academic and General Training candidates.

On Gabble you practise each of these with Academic material: Task 1 prompts built around visuals, Task 2 essay questions, Academic Reading passages and full timed Academic mock tests. Writing and Speaking responses are scored by AI against the four IELTS criteria, with feedback on what to change.

“My writing was holding me back. Gabble's Task 2 feedback was incredibly specific. It told me which sentences were unclear and why, not just a vague score. Went from 6.0 to 7.5 in Writing in five weeks.

Got questions?

IELTS™ Academic FAQ

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
Listening and Speaking are the same in both. In Academic, Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a graph, table, chart or diagram, and Reading uses three long academic texts. In General Training, Writing Task 1 is a letter and Reading uses everyday and workplace texts. Universities and professional bodies usually require Academic; migration programmes usually require General Training.
What kinds of visuals appear in Academic Writing Task 1?
You may be given a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, a combination of these, a map, or a diagram showing a process. Whatever the visual, the task is the same: summarise the main features and make comparisons where relevant, in at least 150 words, without giving your opinion.
Can I take a full IELTS Academic mock test on Gabble?
Yes. Gabble has full Academic mock tests covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking under timed conditions, as well as practice by individual section. Your Writing and Speaking responses receive AI band scores and feedback.
Is Gabble free to start for IELTS prep?
Yes. Every new account gets free practice credits — no credit card needed. You can start a full IELTS-style practice test right after signing up.
Does it cover both IELTS Academic and General Training?
Yes. Both modules are fully supported. Academic includes Task 1 graph/chart descriptions and Academic Reading passages. General Training includes letter writing and General Reading. You can switch between modules at any time.
How does AI score my IELTS Speaking?
Our AI evaluates your Speaking on the four IELTS band descriptors: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation. You get a band estimate and specific feedback within seconds of finishing.
How is Task 1 and Task 2 Writing feedback given?
Both tasks are scored on the official IELTS Writing criteria. Task 1 feedback covers Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, and language use. Task 2 adds Task Response assessment. The AI marks individual sentences and explains what to change.
Are the practice questions similar to real IELTS?
Yes. Reading passages mirror the length and register of real IELTS texts. Listening uses scripted audio with natural academic and everyday English. Speaking prompts follow the Part 1, 2, and 3 structure of the actual exam.
Can I track my band score improvement over time?
Absolutely. Your dashboard tracks your band score for every section across all attempts so you can see your trajectory and focus preparation where it matters most.
