What makes General Training different

Inside the IELTS™ General Training Test

IELTS General Training is the version used for migration to countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and for work, training and secondary education. Listening and Speaking are the same as in Academic. Reading and Writing are built around everyday and workplace English.

Writing Task 1: the letter

You are given a situation and must respond by writing a letter of at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, for example asking for information, explaining a problem, making a complaint or thanking someone. The prompt lists three points you must cover. The letter may need a personal, semi-formal or formal tone, and choosing the wrong one, or missing one of the three points, is the most common reason candidates score lower than they should.

Writing Task 2: the essay

You write an essay of at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, responding to a point of view, argument or problem. The topics are of general interest and the style can be a little more personal than in Academic, but the essay is still marked on the same four criteria, and it counts for twice as much as the letter.

General Training Reading: three sections

You answer 40 questions in 60 minutes across three sections of increasing difficulty. Section 1 has two or three short texts on everyday topics, such as notices, advertisements and timetables. Section 2 focuses on work: job descriptions, contracts, and staff development and training materials. Section 3 is one longer text of general interest. The texts are easier than in Academic, but you need more correct answers to reach the same band.

Listening and Speaking

Listening has four parts and 40 questions in about 30 minutes. Speaking is a three-part interview with an examiner lasting 11 to 14 minutes. Both are the same for General Training and Academic candidates.

On Gabble you practise each of these with General Training material: letter prompts in different tones, Task 2 essay questions, everyday and workplace reading texts and full timed General Training mock tests. Writing and Speaking responses are scored by AI against the four IELTS criteria, with feedback on what to change.

“My writing was holding me back. Gabble's Task 2 feedback was incredibly specific. It told me which sentences were unclear and why, not just a vague score. Went from 6.0 to 7.5 in Writing in five weeks.

IELTS™ General Training FAQ

Who should take IELTS General Training?
General Training is for people migrating to an English-speaking country, and for work experience, training programmes and secondary education. Immigration programmes in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK generally ask for General Training. If you are applying to a university, you almost always need IELTS Academic instead.
What kinds of letters appear in General Training Writing Task 1?
You may be asked to write a personal letter, such as an invitation or thanks to a friend, a semi-formal letter, such as a request to a landlord or manager, or a formal letter, such as a complaint to a company or an application. The situation tells you who you are writing to, and that decides the tone.
Is IELTS General Training easier than Academic?
Listening and Speaking are identical. General Training Reading uses more familiar, everyday texts, and Task 1 is a letter instead of a graph description, which many candidates find more approachable. However, the Reading band conversion is stricter, so you need more correct answers for the same band, and Writing is marked on the same criteria.
Is Gabble free to start for IELTS prep?
Yes. Every new account gets free practice credits — no credit card needed. You can start a full IELTS-style practice test right after signing up.
Does it cover both IELTS Academic and General Training?
Yes. Both modules are fully supported. Academic includes Task 1 graph/chart descriptions and Academic Reading passages. General Training includes letter writing and General Reading. You can switch between modules at any time.
How does AI score my IELTS Speaking?
Our AI evaluates your Speaking on the four IELTS band descriptors: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation. You get a band estimate and specific feedback within seconds of finishing.
How is Task 1 and Task 2 Writing feedback given?
Both tasks are scored on the official IELTS Writing criteria. Task 1 feedback covers Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, and language use. Task 2 adds Task Response assessment. The AI marks individual sentences and explains what to change.
Are the practice questions similar to real IELTS?
Yes. Reading passages mirror the length and register of real IELTS texts. Listening uses scripted audio with natural academic and everyday English. Speaking prompts follow the Part 1, 2, and 3 structure of the actual exam.
Can I track my band score improvement over time?
Absolutely. Your dashboard tracks your band score for every section across all attempts so you can see your trajectory and focus preparation where it matters most.
