How to Register for IELTS — Step by Step Guide (2026)

Gabble Team··6 min read

Registering for IELTS is straightforward — but first-time test-takers often have questions about which test type to book, where to take it, how much it costs, and what to bring on the day. This guide covers everything step by step.

Step 1: Choose Your IELTS Test Type

Before booking, confirm which IELTS test type your purpose requires:

PurposeIELTS Type Required
University admission (most)IELTS Academic
UK Student Route visaIELTS Academic (UKVI approved)
Australia/Canada immigrationIELTS Academic OR General Training
Professional registration (NMC, AHPRA)IELTS Academic
Canada immigration only (no university)IELTS General Training
Australian or Canadian skilled worker visaIELTS Academic or General Training

IELTS Academic vs General Training: Academic has harder Reading and Writing tasks. General Training has more everyday texts and a letter-writing task instead of chart description. Both have identical Listening and Speaking tests.

Step 2: Choose Computer-Delivered or Paper-Based

FormatFrequencyResultsBest For
Computer-Delivered IELTSDaily at most centres3–5 days onlineFaster results; more flexible scheduling
Paper-Based IELTS~4 times/month13 daysThose who prefer writing by hand
IELTS OnlineAny day (home)6–8 daysCannot be used for UK visa or some immigration

Important: IELTS Online (taken at home) is NOT accepted for UK Student Route visa applications. Check your specific purpose.

Step 3: Find a Test Centre

IELTS is administered by two organisations — both offer identical tests and the results are equally valid:

OrganisationWebsiteNotes
British Councilielts.britishcouncil.orgStrong presence in Asia, Middle East, Africa
IDP IELTSielts.idp.comStrong in Australia, South Asia

Both organisations list available test dates and centres by location. Search by city to find the nearest centre and available dates.

Step 4: Create an Account and Register

On British Council or IDP website:

  1. Create an account with your email address
  2. Enter personal details exactly as they appear on your passport
  3. Select test type (Academic / General Training)
  4. Select test format (Computer / Paper)
  5. Select test centre and date
  6. Upload a recent photograph (check the photo requirements carefully)
  7. Confirm your ID document (passport recommended)
  8. Pay the registration fee

IELTS for UKVI — Extra Requirements

If you are taking IELTS specifically for a UK visa application, you must book IELTS for UKVI — not standard IELTS:

  • Must be taken at an approved UKVI test centre (not all centres are approved)
  • Results are sent directly to the UK Visas and Immigration system
  • Test content is identical to standard IELTS but the specific booking and centre requirements differ
  • Check your university's CAS whether they require UKVI or standard IELTS
