Cost works differently for a PhD than for most other graduate degrees, which is worth understanding upfront: in many fields (especially STEM and the sciences), PhD programs — particularly in the US — commonly come with full or near-full funding, meaning tuition is waived and students receive a stipend in exchange for teaching or research assistantship work. This isn't universal, though — funding norms vary substantially by country, field (humanities and social sciences are often funded less generously than STEM), and individual program, and self-funded or partially funded PhD positions do exist. Career Outcomes

PhD outcomes vary substantially by field, and the honest picture is more nuanced than "PhD leads to professor," since academic faculty positions are genuinely limited relative to the number of PhD graduates in most fields:

  • Academic research/faculty roles — the traditional path, typically via one or more postdoctoral positions first in many fields (see our Postdoc guide for how that stage works)
  • Industry research roles — R&D positions in tech, pharma, biotech, and other research-intensive industries, increasingly common and in some fields (like machine learning) now a larger destination than academia
  • Government and policy research — research roles at government agencies, think tanks, and policy organizations, particularly for PhDs in economics, public policy, and related social sciences
  • Consulting and industry strategy roles — some PhD graduates, particularly from quantitative fields, move into consulting or data-science-adjacent industry roles that value the research training without requiring continued academic research
  • Non-research roles that value the credential or training — a smaller but real category, where the PhD signals deep expertise or research skill even in a role that isn't research itself

The variance by field is large enough that it's worth researching outcomes specifically within your field and even your target labs/programs, rather than assuming a PhD guarantees a particular career path.


Who It's For (and Who It's Not For)

A PhD makes sense for people who want to do original research as their actual day-to-day work, ideally with genuine interest in a specific research question or area rather than the credential itself — the multi-year, open-ended nature of the degree is hard to sustain without real interest in the work. It's the right (and often necessary) path if the career you want requires it directly, such as most academic faculty positions or certain research-heavy industry roles.
