Georgia Tech's GRE policy differs sharply between its on-campus graduate programmes and its large-scale Online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCS), the latter never requires a GRE score at all, reflecting its accessibility-focused, large-cohort design.
Does Georgia Tech Require the GRE?
| Programme | GRE Status |
|---|---|
| On-campus College of Computing (MS) | Optional at most; some tracks retain a requirement |
| On-campus College of Engineering (MS) | Mostly optional |
| PhD programmes (on-campus, most departments) | Often required or strongly recommended |
| OMSCS (Online MS in Computer Science) | Not required, no GRE component at all |
| Scheller College of Business (MBA) | GMAT or GRE accepted |
Competitive GRE Scores at Georgia Tech (On-Campus)
| Programme | Competitive Quant | Competitive Verbal |
|---|---|---|
| MS Computer Science (on-campus) | 163 - 168 | 152 - 160 |
| MS Electrical/Computer Engineering | 160 - 166 | 148 - 155 |
| PhD (most Engineering/CS departments) | 165 - 170 | 155 - 163 |
The OMSCS Exception
OMSCS is Georgia Tech's large-scale, low-cost online Master's in Computer Science, admitting a much larger cohort than the on-campus programme with a correspondingly different evaluation process, no GRE, GMAT, or standardised test score is part of OMSCS admissions at all. This is a key distinction for applicants deciding between the on-campus and online pathways.
GRE Is Separate From English Proficiency
For on-campus programmes, a GRE score does not satisfy Georgia Tech's English language requirement. International applicants still need TOEFL or IELTS:
| Requirement | Georgia Tech Policy |
|---|---|
| GRE | Mostly optional on-campus; not required for OMSCS |
| TOEFL | Required for on-campus programmes, see our Georgia Tech guide |
| IELTS | Required for on-campus programmes, see our Georgia Tech guide |
