IELTS Online (Home Edition) vs Test Centre — Which is Better? (2026)

Gabble Team··5 min read

IELTS Online (formerly called IELTS Home Edition) allows test-takers to complete their IELTS from home — using a computer and webcam, monitored by an AI proctor. Since its introduction in 2020, it has become a popular alternative to attending a test centre. But it is not accepted everywhere — and the experience is meaningfully different. This guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is IELTS Online?

IELTS Online is a version of IELTS Academic taken at home on your own computer:

  • Monitored by AI proctoring and human review
  • Delivered by IDP IELTS (not British Council, as of 2026)
  • Available for IELTS Academic only (not General Training)
  • Results available in 3–6 days

Key Differences: IELTS Online vs Test Centre

Acceptance — The Critical Difference

IELTS Online IS accepted by:

  • Most UK, Australian, Canadian, and US universities
  • IRCC Canada (immigration)
  • Australia's Department of Home Affairs (immigration)
  • Most professional bodies that accept IELTS Academic

IELTS Online is NOT accepted by:

  • UK Home Office for Student Route Visa (requires IELTS for UKVI at approved centre)
  • Some professional bodies that specifically require "in-person" IELTS

Important: If you need IELTS for a UK visa, you must take the test at a UKVI-approved test centre. IELTS Online does not satisfy UK visa requirements.

Technical Requirements for IELTS Online

RequirementSpecification
ComputerWindows or Mac; no tablets, Chromebooks, or smartphones
WebcamBuilt-in or external; must show your face and workspace
MicrophoneRequired; built-in acceptable
InternetStable broadband; minimum 1 Mbps download/upload recommended
RoomQuiet, private; no other people permitted; clear desk
BrowserSpecific browser required by IDP (updated before test)

Pre-test system check: IDP requires you to complete a technical check before booking. If your system doesn't meet requirements, you will be redirected to a test centre.

The Speaking Component — Key Difference

In IELTS Online, Speaking is conducted via video call with a trained IELTS examiner — similar to a Zoom call. The examiner follows the same format (Parts 1, 2, 3) and uses the same assessment criteria.

Practical differences:

  • You see the examiner on your screen; they see your webcam feed
  • There may be slight audio delay — important for pacing
  • Technical issues (connection drop) are handled by the test provider; if significant disruption occurs, you may be offered a reschedule
  • Some test-takers find the video format less natural than in-person; others prefer it

Proctoring — What the AI and Human Monitors Check

During IELTS Online, you are monitored throughout by:

  • AI monitoring: Flags unusual eye movements, voices, or movement
  • Human review: IDP staff review flagged moments and can view recordings

Prohibited during the test:

  • Another person entering the room
  • Looking at a second screen
  • Referring to notes, books, or your phone
  • Leaving the webcam frame

If the proctor detects a violation, the test may be paused or cancelled. Serious violations result in score cancellation and may affect future test bookings.
