For Indian and other international students applying to undergraduate programmes in the US (and some Canadian universities), the SAT and ACT are the two standardised tests used to assess academic readiness. Both are accepted equally by virtually every US university, so the right choice comes down to which format suits your strengths — and increasingly, whether you need to take either test at all.
Quick Comparison
| Feature | SAT | ACT |
|---|---|---|
| Sections | Reading & Writing, Math | English, Math, Reading, Science (+ optional Writing) |
| Format | Digital, adaptive | Digital and paper (varies by region); shorter redesigned format from 2025 |
| Total time | ~2 hours 14 minutes | ~2 hours (core sections; redesigned format) |
| Score range | 400–1600 | 1–36 |
| Calculator | Allowed throughout Math section | Allowed throughout Math section |
| Science section | None (science reasoning embedded in Reading/Math) | Dedicated Science section (now optional in redesigned format) |
| Retake policy | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Superscoring | Widely accepted | Increasingly accepted |
SAT — Structure and Scoring
The digital SAT is adaptive: your performance on the first module of a section determines the difficulty of the second module.
| Section | Score Range |
|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 200–800 |
| Math | 200–800 |
| Total | 400–1600 |
Strengths of the SAT for international students:
- Shorter overall testing time
- Heavier weighting on reading comprehension and grammar — favours strong English readers
- Math section allows calculator use throughout
- No science section to prepare for separately
ACT — Structure and Scoring
| Section | Score Range |
|---|---|
| English | 1–36 |
| Math | 1–36 |
| Reading | 1–36 |
| Science (optional in redesigned format) | 1–36 |
| Composite | Average of section scores, 1–36 |
| Writing (optional) | Scored separately, 2–12 |
Strengths of the ACT for international students:
- More straightforward, less "trick"-based question style — rewards content knowledge directly
- Science section (where taken) tests data interpretation, not memorised science facts — strong for STEM-oriented students
- Often considered more "speed-based" but with more predictable question formats
Score Concordance (SAT ↔ ACT)
| SAT Score | ACT Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1600 | 36 |
| 1500 | 33–34 |
| 1400 | 31 |
| 1300 | 28 |
| 1200 | 25 |
| 1100 | 22 |
| 1000 | 19–20 |

Test-Optional Policies in 2026
Since 2020, most US universities — including many in the Ivy League — adopted test-optional policies, and a number have remained test-optional or test-flexible into 2026. However, for international applicants, submitting a strong SAT/ACT score is often still advantageous:
- It provides a standardised data point alongside an unfamiliar (to US admissions officers) home-country grading system
- It can strengthen merit scholarship applications, many of which retain score requirements
- Some highly selective universities (including several Ivy League and top public universities) have reinstated mandatory testing for all applicants — always check each university's current policy individually, as it varies year to year and by institution
Does the SAT/ACT Replace IELTS/TOEFL?
No — for most universities, they serve different purposes. SAT/ACT measure academic readiness; IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo measure English proficiency for non-native speakers. However:
- A small number of universities will waive the English proficiency requirement if you score above a certain threshold on the SAT Reading & Writing section (commonly 600+) or ACT English/Reading sections
- This waiver is institution-specific and not guaranteed — most Indian applicants should still plan to take IELTS or TOEFL alongside the SAT/ACT unless a specific university's policy explicitly confirms a waiver
How to Choose
| If you... | Consider |
|---|---|
| Prefer fewer, longer sections and adaptive testing | SAT |
| Are stronger in science/data interpretation | ACT (if Science section is included in your test version) |
| Want a shorter total testing time | SAT (digital) |
| Find ACT's straightforward question style less stressful than SAT's reasoning-based questions | ACT |
| Are unsure | Take one full-length practice test of each and compare percentile performance |
Preparation Timeline
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Months 1–2 | Diagnostic test (both SAT and ACT); choose your test |
| Months 2–4 | Section-by-section content review and timed practice |
| Month 5 | Full-length practice tests under timed conditions |
| Month 6 | Final review, weak-area drilling, test day logistics |
