Studying in the UK for Pakistani Students — Universities, Costs, Visas, and Scholarships (2026)

Gabble Team··8 min read

Pakistan is now the third-largest source of international students in the UK — the UK issued 35,045 study visas to Pakistani nationals in 2024, and new student visa issuances to Pakistanis have grown enormously since 2019. This guide covers everything a Pakistani student needs to know about studying in the UK, from choosing a university to receiving your student visa.

Why Pakistani Students Choose the UK

  • One-year master's programmes — the UK's one-year master's costs less in total than a two-year US programme
  • Large, established Pakistani-British community — significant Pakistani populations in Bradford, Birmingham, Manchester, London, and many other UK cities
  • Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships — Pakistan receives a substantial annual allocation of both
  • Graduate Route visa — post-study work rights after completing a UK degree
  • Recognised qualifications — UK degrees are widely recognised by employers and professional bodies in Pakistan

UK Universities Popular with Pakistani Students

University of ManchesterManchesterRussell Group; large Pakistani student population; strong business and engineering
University of BirminghamBirminghamRussell Group; close to one of the UK's largest Pakistani-British communities
University of LeedsLeedsAffordable Russell Group option; strong across social sciences and engineering
Coventry UniversityCoventryLarge international intake; more accessible entry requirements
University of BradfordBradfordDeep historical ties to the Pakistani-British community
King's College LondonLondonStrong health sciences, law, and social sciences
University of HertfordshireHertfordshirePopular for business and computing; accessible IELTS requirements
Cardiff UniversityCardiffRussell Group; strong engineering and journalism programmes

Russell Group universities (the UK's top-tier research institutions) — including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Leeds — typically require IELTS 6.5–7.0+ for postgraduate admission. Other accredited UK universities may accept IELTS 6.0–6.5.

IELTS for UK Study — Standard IELTS vs IELTS UKVI

This is the single most important point for Pakistani students applying to the UK.

PurposeTest Needed
University admissionIELTS Academic (standard)
UK Student visaIELTS UKVI Academic (a Secure English Language Test, SELT)

Pakistan is not on the UK's majority English-speaking country list, so Pakistani students need a SELT for the visa. IELTS UKVI Academic is the most widely used SELT.

The solution: Take IELTS UKVI Academic from the start. The test content and scoring are identical to standard IELTS Academic — one test satisfies both your university's admission requirement and your visa's SELT requirement.

Where to take IELTS UKVI Academic in Pakistan:

  • British Council Pakistan: computer-delivered IELTS in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Multan, and Sukkur
  • IDP Pakistan: a wider network including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Quetta, Hyderabad, and several smaller cities
  • Book at britishcouncil.pk or ielts.idp.com/pakistan — select "IELTS for UKVI" when booking. As of March 2026, all IELTS testing in Pakistan is computer-delivered only.

IELTS Score Requirements

UK Study LevelVisa Minimum (CEFR)Typical University Minimum
UndergraduateB2 = IELTS 5.56.0–6.5 (varies)
Postgraduate (master's / PhD)B2 = IELTS 5.56.5–7.0 (Russell Group often 7.0)
FoundationB2 = IELTS 5.55.5–6.0

Your university's requirement is always higher than the visa minimum — meeting your university's requirement automatically satisfies the visa.

UK University Costs for Pakistani Students

CostRange
Postgraduate tuition (humanities/social science)£13,000–£20,000/year
Postgraduate tuition (STEM/engineering)£17,000–£30,000/year
MBA£20,000–£45,000/year
Living costs — London£1,300–£2,200/month
Living costs — other UK cities£1,000–£1,600/month

Cost advantage of one-year master's: A UK postgraduate master's typically takes one year, unlike two years in the USA. Total cost is significantly lower even when annual tuition is broadly comparable.

The UK Student Visa Process for Pakistani Nationals

1. IELTS UKVI Academic Test

Sit IELTS UKVI Academic and obtain your Test Report Form (TRF) before applying for the visa.

2. Receive Your CAS from the University

After accepting a formal offer, the university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — a 14-digit reference number required for your visa application. Universities typically issue CAS 6–12 weeks before the course start date.

3. TB (Tuberculosis) Test

Pakistani nationals are required to complete a TB test for UK visa applications of 6 months or longer, which includes every student visa. The test must be done at a Home Office-approved clinic in Pakistan.

DetailInformation
Who must do itPakistani citizens applying for a UK visa of 6+ months
Approved clinicsListed at gov.uk (search "tuberculosis test clinics in Pakistan") — options include IOM-run clinics and other approved providers in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore
ProcedureChest X-ray reviewed by an approved radiologist
Certificate validity6 months — book close to your application date

Book the TB test before submitting the online visa application — the certificate is a required document.

4. Complete the Online Visa Application

Apply at gov.uk/student-visa:

  • Create a UK Visas and Immigration online account
  • Complete the application form
  • Pay the visa application fee (£558, current since April 2026) and the IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge)
  • Book your VFS appointment

5. IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge)

The IHS gives you access to NHS services during your stay and is paid upfront as part of the application.

DurationIHS Cost
Per year£776
One-year master's~£1,000–1,300 (with buffer for visa length)
Three-year PhD~£2,500–3,000

6. Financial Evidence (28-Day Rule)

You must show you can cover your first-year tuition fee (as on the CAS) plus living costs:

  • London: £1,334/month × up to 9 months
  • Outside London: £1,023/month × up to 9 months

Funds must be held in your account for a continuous 28 days, ending within 31 days of your application date. A sudden large deposit does not satisfy this — the 28-day balance history is what matters.

A Chevening or Commonwealth Scholarship award letter replaces all financial evidence.

7. Biometrics at VFS Global Pakistan

Book a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre — Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, or Mirpur.

Graduate Route — Post-Study Work in the UK

After completing your UK degree:

Qualification CompletedGraduate Route Duration
Bachelor's degree (apply by 31 Dec 2026)2 years
Master's degree (apply by 31 Dec 2026)2 years
PhD3 years

Upcoming change: for non-doctoral graduates applying from 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route is scheduled to shorten to 18 months. If your programme finishes near this cutoff, factor the timing into your planning. No job offer is needed at the point of switching onto the Graduate Route, and many Pakistani graduates go on to the Skilled Worker visa if they secure sponsored employment.

Practical Tips for Pakistani Students in the UK

  • Bank account: Most UK banks offer student accounts; digital banks like Monzo and Starling are often easier to open shortly after arrival
  • UK weather: Bring warm clothing for an autumn arrival — September/October start means cold weather by November
  • Pakistani Student Societies: Most UK universities have active Pakistani Society or South Asian Society groups — a strong first point of contact for community and events
  • Sending money: Compare remittance rates between Pakistan and the UK on Wise, Remitly, or similar services rather than using bank wire transfers by default
