Studying in the UK for Japanese Students — Chevening, IELTS UKVI, and Graduate Route (2026)

Gabble Team··7 min read

The United Kingdom is an increasingly popular destination for Japanese students — particularly for postgraduate study. The one-year master's format appeals to Japanese professionals who want an internationally recognised qualification without a two-year absence from the Japanese job market. Chevening Japan provides fully-funded access to this pathway for outstanding leaders.

Why Japanese Students Choose the UK

  • One-year master's — a full UK postgraduate degree in 12 months; the most time-efficient overseas master's format available
  • Chevening Japan — the UK government awards Chevening Scholarships to exceptional Japanese applicants annually
  • London's global profile — finance, law, creative industries, international relations — professions where a UK credential carries significant weight
  • IELTS (not TOEFL) — UK study uses IELTS, which Japanese students going to Australia already prepare for; the IELTS pathway is shared across UK, Australia, and Canada
  • Graduate Route — 2 years of open post-study work rights (or 3 years for PhD) with no job offer requirement
  • Japanese community in London — substantial Japanese community in Central London, Acton, Hammersmith, and Notting Hill; Japanese schools, restaurants, supermarkets (Japan Centre, Minamoto Kitchoan), and cultural events

IELTS UKVI Academic — Required for the UK Student Visa

Japanese students, like all non-exempt nationalities, need a SELT (Secure English Language Test) for the UK Student visa. The most commonly used SELT is IELTS UKVI Academic.

IELTS UKVI Academic is identical to standard IELTS Academic — same format, same scoring. Taking IELTS UKVI Academic satisfies both admission and visa requirements.

No TB test for Japanese nationals: Unlike applicants from many Asian and African countries, Japanese citizens are not required to complete a tuberculosis test for UK visa applications. This simplifies the process.

Take IELTS UKVI Academic in Japan. Receive your Test Report Form (TRF).

Step 2: CAS from UK University

After accepting a UK university offer and paying any required deposit, the university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — a 14-digit reference number. CAS is issued 6–12 weeks before the programme start date.

Step 3: Online Visa Application

Apply at gov.uk/student-visa:

  • Create UKVI online account
  • Complete application (personal details, CAS reference, travel history, finances)

Step 5: Financial Evidence — 28-Day Rule

Show you can cover:

  • First-year tuition (as on CAS)

Funds held continuously for 28 days ending within 31 days of application.

Japanese yen bank statements are accepted — converted value at statement date must meet GBP requirement.

Chevening award letter replaces all financial evidence.

UK visa biometrics for Japanese applicants are submitted at a VFS Global or UKVCAS centre in Japan (Tokyo is the primary location). Check current booking arrangements at gov.uk — biometric collection arrangements are updated periodically.

Graduate Route — Post-Study Work in the UK

QualificationDuration
Bachelor's2 years
Master's2 years
PhD3 years

The Graduate Route allows any work in any field — no job offer required. Japanese graduates in London frequently use the Graduate Route to gain experience in finance, consulting, tech, or international organisations (UN agencies, World Bank offices, EU representation bodies in London).

Return to Japan with UK experience: Japanese employers — particularly major banks, trading companies (sōgō shōsha), consulting firms, and technology companies — value UK postgraduate degrees and London work experience. The one-year master's + two-year Graduate Route = a 3-year overseas experience that fits within a career timeline that still allows re-entry into senior Japanese corporate tracks.
