UK Student Visa for Nigerian Students — Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

Gabble Team··8 min read

The UK is the top study destination for Nigerian students, but the UK Student visa process has several Nigeria-specific requirements that are not always clearly communicated. The most important: Nigerian nationals need IELTS UKVI Academic (not standard IELTS Academic) for the visa, and they are required to complete a tuberculosis (TB) test before applying. This guide walks through the complete process.

Before You Apply — Two Things Nigeria-Specific

1. Use IELTS UKVI Academic, Not Standard IELTS Academic

Nigeria is not on the UK's exempt country list for English language testing. Nigerian students need a SELT (Secure English Language Test) for the UK Student visa. IELTS UKVI Academic is the most widely used SELT.

PurposeTest Required
UK university admissionIELTS Academic (standard) OR IELTS UKVI Academic
UK Student visaIELTS UKVI Academic (or another approved SELT)

IELTS UKVI Academic is the same test as standard IELTS Academic — same format, same scoring, same day. The only difference is its designation as a SELT. Taking IELTS UKVI Academic satisfies both your university's admission requirement and your visa's SELT requirement in one sitting.

Where to take IELTS UKVI Academic in Nigeria:

  • British Council Nigeria: Lagos (multiple centres), Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Enugu, Benin City, Uyo
  • IDP Nigeria: Lagos, Abuja
  • Book at britishcouncil.org.ng or ielts.idp.com — select "IELTS for UKVI" when booking

2. Complete the TB (Tuberculosis) Test

Nigerian nationals are required to complete a tuberculosis (TB) test as part of any UK visa application lasting 6 months or longer. All UK Student visas are longer than 6 months. This test is mandatory — there is no exemption.

UKVI-approved TB test clinics in Nigeria: Lagos (multiple locations), Abuja, and other major cities. Check the current list at gov.uk/tb-test-visa — the list is updated periodically and not all clinics listed are always operational.

Timing: Complete your TB test close to (but before) your visa application date. The certificate is valid for 6 months. If your visa is delayed and the certificate expires, you will need to retest.

IELTS UKVI Score Requirements

Study LevelUK Visa CEFR RequirementIELTS UKVI Equivalent
Postgraduate (master's, PhD)B25.5 overall
UndergraduateB25.5 overall
FoundationB25.5 overall

The visa minimum (5.5) is always lower than the university's admission requirement (typically 6.5–7.0 for postgraduate at Russell Group universities). Aim for your university's requirement — it automatically clears the visa floor.

Chevening IELTS requirement: If you are applying for Chevening alongside your student visa, Chevening requires IELTS UKVI Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5. One IELTS UKVI Academic test serves both Chevening and the visa.

Step-by-Step Visa Application Process

Step 1: Receive Your IELTS UKVI Academic Score

Sit the test and receive your Test Report Form (TRF). You need the TRF reference number for the visa application and the original TRF for the VFS appointment.

Step 2: Receive Your CAS from the University

After accepting a formal offer from a UK university and paying any required deposit, the university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — a 14-digit reference number. You cannot apply for the visa without it.

When universities issue CAS: Typically 6–12 weeks before the programme start date. Universities cannot issue CAS more than 6 months before the start date.

Step 3: Complete the TB Test

Book and attend the TB test at a UKVI-approved clinic in Nigeria. Receive your TB test certificate (typically a chest X-ray report with radiologist's sign-off).

Step 4: Complete the Online Visa Application

Go to gov.uk/student-visa:

  • Create a UK Visas and Immigration account
  • Complete the online application form (personal details, CAS reference, travel history, financial details)
  • Pay the visa application fee (£490) online
  • Pay the IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge) online — see below

Step 5: Pay the IHS

DurationIHS Cost
Per year of visa£776/year
One-year master's (visa typically 13–14 months)~£1,000–1,200
Three-year PhD (visa typically 3.5 years)~£2,800–3,000

IHS gives you access to NHS healthcare during your stay in the UK. It is paid in full upfront — you cannot pay annually.

Step 6: Financial Evidence — The 28-Day Rule

You must show you can cover:

  • Tuition: First-year tuition as stated on your CAS
  • Living costs (London): £1,334/month × up to 9 months = £12,006
  • Living costs (outside London): £1,023/month × up to 9 months = £9,207

Funds must be held in your account for a continuous 28-day period ending within 31 days of your visa application submission date.

The 28-day rule means: if you apply for the visa on July 15, your bank statement must show the required amount held continuously from June 17 to July 15 at minimum.

Important for Nigerian applicants: Nigerian Naira bank statements are accepted. The converted value at the date of the statement must meet the GBP requirement at the prevailing exchange rate.

Scholarship holders: A Chevening or Commonwealth Scholarship award letter replaces all financial evidence.

Step 7: Biometrics at VFS Global Nigeria

Book an appointment at VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre in Lagos or Abuja:

  • VFS Global collects your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and your documents
  • Book at vfsglobal.com/gbr/ng

Documents to bring to VFS:

DocumentNotes
Passport (original)Valid for full study period; handed to VFS and returned with visa decision
IELTS UKVI Academic TRFOriginal Test Report Form — required
CAS referenceThe 14-digit number
TB test certificateOriginal
Financial evidenceOriginal bank statements / scholarship letter
IHS receiptFrom online payment
Visa application confirmation printPrint-out from online application

Step 8: Wait for Decision

Processing time from biometrics: typically 3–8 weeks for standard processing. Priority service (additional fee) reduces to approximately 5 business days.

Do not book non-refundable flights or accommodation before receiving your visa decision.

Common Reasons for UK Student Visa Refusals — Nigerian Applicants

The UK Student visa refusal rate for Nigerian applicants is higher than for many other nationalities. Understanding the common reasons allows you to address them proactively:

ReasonHow to Address
Insufficient financial evidenceFollow the 28-day rule strictly; ensure funds have been in account 28 continuous days
TB test not completedBook TB test early; check UKVI-approved clinic status before booking
IELTS is standard Academic (not UKVI)Book IELTS UKVI Academic specifically — confirm "UKVI" designation when booking
CAS not yet issuedDo not apply before receiving CAS from university
Intent to remain in UKStrong personal statement explaining career goals in Nigeria; family ties in Nigeria
Vague or inconsistent personal statementBe specific about why you chose the specific university and programme and what you will do after returning

Graduate Route — Post-Study Work in the UK

After completing a UK degree at a licensed Student Sponsor:

QualificationGraduate Route Duration
Bachelor's degree2 years
Master's degree2 years
PhD3 years

The Graduate Route allows any employment in any sector — no job offer required at the point of switching. Nigerian healthcare professionals frequently use the Graduate Route as a bridge to NHS Skilled Worker sponsorship.

From Graduate Route to Skilled Worker: If you secure a sponsored role with an NHS Trust, a university, or another licensed UK sponsor, you can switch from Graduate Route to Skilled Worker visa. This is not a route to permanent settlement by itself — Skilled Worker visa is needed for the ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) pathway after 5 years.
