What Is a PharmD Degree?

It's the entry-level, terminal degree required to sit for pharmacist licensure exams in the US — there's no separate "pharmacist license" pathway that doesn't run through a PharmD (or, for foreign-trained pharmacists, an equivalent foreign-degree certification process). In that sense it functions more like an MD or a DPT than like a PhD: it exists to produce licensed practitioners, not to train researchers, though PharmD graduates can and do go on to research and academic careers as well.

The US Structure Is Genuinely Different

This is the detail that trips up a lot of people researching pharmacy degrees internationally: in the US, pharmacy is not structured as a standalone undergraduate degree the way it is in many other countries.

  • In the US, the PharmD is a graduate-entry professional doctorate. Students complete a minimum of two years of pre-pharmacy coursework (often as part of a full bachelor's degree, though some students apply after just the prerequisites) and then enter a separate four-year professional PharmD program — roughly six years total from the start of college.
  • In the UK, by contrast, the MPharm is a single integrated undergraduate master's degree that school leavers enter directly at eighteen, running four years total, with a separate foundation training year afterward leading to GPhC registration.   • Additional costs — licensing exam fees, board-exam prep, and clinical rotation-related expenses — add to the base tuition figure.

Career Outcomes

PharmD graduates typically move into:

  • Community/retail pharmacy — dispensing medications, patient counseling, and increasingly expanded clinical services (vaccinations, medication therapy management) at retail and independent pharmacies
  • Hospital and clinical pharmacy — working directly with medical teams on medication management, often requiring additional post-PharmD residency training for specialized clinical roles
  • Industry roles — pharmaceutical companies in drug development, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, or clinical research
  • Academia and research — teaching and research faculty positions, particularly for graduates who pursue additional research training or a combined PharmD/PhD
  • Specialized clinical practice — oncology, psychiatric, infectious disease, and other specialty pharmacy roles, typically requiring post-graduate residency (PGY1/PGY2) training

All paths require passing the NAPLEX after graduating from an ACPE-accredited program, plus a state-specific law exam (MPJE) for the state where you intend to practice.

A PharmD is generally the right choice if:

  • You want to become a licensed pharmacist practicing in the US specifically, whether in community, hospital, or specialized clinical settings
  • You're comfortable with the graduate-entry structure — completing pre-pharmacy coursework first, then a further four-year professional program
  • You're interested in medication-focused patient care, drug therapy management, or pharmaceutical industry work
