Canada offers Nigerian students a dedicated fast-track student visa stream — the Student Direct Stream (SDS) — that cuts processing time from months to weeks. This guide explains the SDS requirements, what a GIC is, how to apply, and what happens after you graduate.
Two Routes: SDS vs Regular Stream
| Feature | Student Direct Stream (SDS) | Regular Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Processing time | ~20 calendar days | 8–12 weeks |
| IELTS requirement | 6.0 overall, no band below 6.0 | Per university requirement |
| GIC required | Yes — CAD 20,635 | Not required (bank statements instead) |
| Medical exam | Upfront (before applying) | May be requested after application |
| Who applies | Nigerian citizens applying to Designated Learning Institutions | Same |
| Police clearance | Required | Required |
| Application fee | CAD 150 | CAD 150 |
The SDS is almost always the better option for Nigerian students — the 20-day processing time is dramatically faster than the regular stream and significantly reduces uncertainty before a programme start date.
SDS Requirements for Nigerian Applicants
1. IELTS Academic — 6.0 Overall, No Band Below 6.0
This is the SDS IELTS threshold. Every single band (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) must be 6.0 or above. A 7.5/7.5/7.5/5.5 overall of 7.0 does not meet the SDS IELTS requirement because one band is below 6.0.
Which IELTS: IELTS Academic (standard) — NOT IELTS UKVI Academic. Canada does not require UKVI. Standard IELTS Academic is the right test for Canada.
TOEFL for SDS: The SDS programme for Nigeria specifically lists IELTS and TOEFL iBT (105+) as accepted. For most Nigerian students, IELTS 6.0 is more achievable than TOEFL 105 (a very high score). IELTS is the practical SDS test for Nigerian applicants.
2. Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Your Canadian university or college must be a DLI (Designated Learning Institution) — listed at canada.ca. All accredited Canadian universities are DLIs. Community colleges are also DLIs if they have international student capacity. The acceptance letter is a required document.
Post-graduation work permit eligibility: Only full-time programmes at DLIs that are specifically PGWP-eligible allow access to the Post-Graduate Work Permit after graduation. Most full-time degree and diploma programmes at Canadian public colleges and universities are PGWP-eligible; most private institutions are not. Confirm PGWP eligibility before enrolling.
3. GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) — CAD 20,635
The GIC is the central SDS financial requirement. It is not a scholarship or loan — it is your own money, held in trust by a Canadian bank, released to you after arrival.
How the GIC works:
-
Apply for a student GIC account online with a participating Canadian bank:
- Scotiabank (most common — specifically partnered with SDS)
- CIBC
- TD Bank
- Simplii Financial (CIBC subsidiary, fully online)
- HSBC Canada
- National Bank of Canada
-
Transfer CAD 20,635 from Nigeria via wire transfer to the Canadian bank. The bank gives you wire transfer instructions.
-
The bank issues a GIC certificate confirming the funds are held.
-
You submit the GIC certificate as part of your SDS visa application.
-
After arriving in Canada, the bank releases funds to you in installments — typically CAD 2,000 upfront, then the remainder in ~10 monthly payments.
Currency and transfer from Nigeria: Wire transfer from a Nigerian bank in USD → Canadian dollars. Given Nigeria's FX controls, use a bank with international transfer capability (First Bank, GTBank, Access Bank, UBA, Zenith Bank all handle SWIFT transfers for educational purposes). The transfer typically takes 3–7 business days to clear at the Canadian bank.
4. Medical Examination (Upfront for SDS)
Unlike the regular stream (where medical examination is requested after application), SDS requires you to complete the medical exam before submitting the visa application.
- Approved physician: Must be a designated panel physician — check the current list at canada.ca
- Lagos and Abuja both have panel physicians
- Cost: Approximately ₦80,000–₦120,000
- Validity: 12 months
- The medical exam includes physical examination, blood tests, and chest X-ray (for tuberculosis screening)
5. Police Clearance Certificate
Obtain a police clearance certificate from the Nigerian Police Force (apply at your state police headquarters or via the NPF online portal). Processing can take 2–4 weeks — start early.

How to Apply — Online Process

- Also receive an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) if flying directly
Financial Documentation — Regular Stream (Non-SDS)
If you do not qualify for SDS (e.g., IELTS below 6.0 overall, or applying to a non-SDS institution type), you apply through the regular stream and must show financial capacity through bank statements:
| Requirement | Amount |
|---|---|
| First-year tuition | As per acceptance letter |
| Living costs | CAD 20,000+ per year |
| Return flight | Evidence of funds |
| Total typical requirement | CAD 40,000–50,000 in demonstrable funds |
Bank statements should show the balance sustained over a period of time — not a recent large deposit without history.
Living and Studying in Canada as a Nigerian Student
Working during study:
- Students at DLIs with full-time enrolment: up to 20 hours per week during academic terms
- Unlimited hours during scheduled breaks
- Many Nigerian students work in retail, food service, or campus support roles
Nigerian communities: Toronto has one of the largest Nigerian diaspora communities outside Africa — particularly in Brampton, Mississauga, and north Toronto. Growing communities also exist in Calgary and Edmonton.
NYSC deferral: If you are a fresh Nigerian graduate heading to Canada, apply for NYSC deferral. NYSC issues deferral letters for study abroad purposes — check the current directive from the National Youth Service Corps.
PGWP — Post-Graduate Work Permit
After completing a full-time programme at a PGWP-eligible DLI:
| Programme Duration | PGWP Duration |
|---|---|
| 8 months to under 2 years | Same as programme length |
| 2 years or more | 3 years |
The PGWP is an open work permit — work for any Canadian employer in any role or sector. This is the foundation of Canada's immigration appeal for Nigerian students.
Express Entry — Permanent Residence Pathway
After the PGWP, Nigerian graduates with Canadian work experience can apply for permanent residence through:
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — requires 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada
- Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) — for those with skilled work experience, including Canadian
Points-based Express Entry profiles rank candidates — Canadian education and Canadian work experience both generate significant Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. Nigerian graduates of Canadian universities with one year of Canadian work experience are competitive Express Entry candidates.
