UK Student Visa for Azerbaijani Students — Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

Gabble Team··7 min read

Applying for a UK Student visa as an Azerbaijani national involves a specific set of requirements that differ from standard IELTS for university admission. This guide covers the complete process — from securing the right English test to submitting biometrics in Baku and understanding financial requirements.

Before You Apply: Two Requirements, Not One

The UK requires Azerbaijani students to meet two separate English language standards:

RequirementSet ByPurposeTest Required
University admissionYour UK universityAcademic entryIELTS Academic (standard)
Student visaUK Home Office (UKVI)ImmigrationIELTS UKVI Academic — not standard IELTS Academic

The critical point: Azerbaijan is not on the UK's majority English-speaking country exemption list. Azerbaijani students applying for a UK Student visa must provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) — and IELTS UKVI Academic is the most widely used SELT.

The most efficient solution: Take IELTS UKVI Academic from the start. It satisfies both your university's admission requirement AND the Home Office's visa SELT requirement in a single test sitting. Taking standard IELTS Academic for your university offer and then having to sit IELTS UKVI separately for the visa is an avoidable extra cost.

See our UK Student Visa IELTS Requirements guide for score requirements by university and study level.

IELTS UKVI Score Requirements for the UK Student Visa

The UK Home Office sets minimum English proficiency in CEFR terms:

Study LevelCEFR LevelMinimum IELTS UKVIPer-Skill Minimum
Degree (bachelor's, master's, PhD)B25.5 overallNo skill below 5.5
Foundation yearB25.5No skill below 5.5
Below degree (HND, diploma, college)B14.0No skill below 4.0

Important: These are the visa minimums — your university's academic admission requirement is almost always higher. Oxford requires 7.0–7.5; most Russell Group postgraduate programmes require 6.5–7.0. Your university's requirement is the operative target — if you meet it, you will always exceed the visa floor.

Where to Take IELTS UKVI in Azerbaijan

IELTS UKVI Academic is available in Baku:

ProviderLocationRegistration
British Council AzerbaijanBaku officebritishcouncil.az
IDP AzerbaijanBakuielts.idp.com

Test format: IELTS UKVI Academic is identical in content and format to standard IELTS Academic — the difference is in the identity verification and administration standards, which meet the Home Office's SELT requirements. The same preparation applies to both.

Available formats: Paper-based and computer-delivered — check current availability in Baku at time of booking.

Score results: Approximately 13 days for paper-based; 3–5 days for computer-delivered.

The UK Student Visa Application Process

Step 1: Receive Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

Before you can apply for the visa, your UK university must issue you a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — a reference number assigned through the UKVI system. You cannot start the visa application without this.

When universities issue CAS: Typically 6–12 weeks before the programme start date (you cannot apply for a visa more than 6 months before your course starts).

Step 2: Complete the Online Visa Application (Form VAF6)

The UK Student visa application is completed online at gov.uk/student-visa. You will:

  • Enter your CAS reference number
  • Provide personal details, travel history, financial details
  • Upload supporting documents
  • Pay the visa application fee and IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge)

Visa application fee: £490 (outside the UK — international applications)

IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge): £776 per year of your visa (e.g., a 3-year programme = 3 × £776 = £2,328 paid upfront). The IHS provides access to NHS services in the UK during your stay.

Step 3: Book Biometrics Appointment in Baku

After completing the online application, you must book a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Azerbaijan. UK visa applications for Azerbaijani nationals are processed through VFS Global (VFS operates the UK VAC in Baku).

  • VFS Global Baku: Books biometric appointments (fingerprints and photograph)
  • Book via vfsglobal.com/gbr/az
  • Bring your passport and application reference
  • Documents are submitted at this appointment (or via courier service offered by VFS)

Processing time after biometrics: UK Student visa processing from Baku typically takes 3–8 weeks. Apply well in advance — do not book flights before receiving your visa.

Priority processing: Available for an additional fee — reduces processing time to approximately 5 business days. Worth considering if your programme start date is approaching.

Step 4: Documents to Submit

DocumentNotes
Valid passportMust be valid for the full duration of your course
CAS reference from universityYour 14-digit CAS reference number from your UK university's system
IELTS UKVI Academic scoreOriginal Test Report Form (TRF) — must be original, not a copy
Financial evidenceProof you can cover tuition and living costs (see below)
Tuberculosis (TB) test resultRequired for applicants from Azerbaijan — must be from an approved clinic
Passport-sized photographsPer VAC specifications

Financial Requirements

You must show sufficient funds in your bank account to cover:

  • Tuition for first year (as stated on your CAS)
  • Living costs: £1,334/month for up to 9 months if studying outside London (= £12,006); or £1,334/month in London (= varies)

The 28-day rule: Funds must have been held in your account for a continuous period of at least 28 days before the date of your application. The bank statement must clearly show this period.

Acceptable accounts: Personal or joint bank account in your name; some sponsorship letters may also be accepted. Overdrafts, credit card accounts, and funds showing recent large deposits without clear source may raise questions.

Loan letters and scholarship letters: If your studies are funded by a scholarship (e.g., Chevening), the official scholarship award letter replaces the financial evidence requirement.

Tuberculosis Test Requirement

Azerbaijani nationals applying for a UK visa of more than 6 months (which includes all student visas) must take a tuberculosis (TB) test at a UK Visas and Immigration approved clinic. The test must be done at an approved clinic in Azerbaijan (not a general hospital).

  • Check the current list of approved clinics in Azerbaijan at gov.uk/tb-test-visa
  • The test takes approximately 2–3 days to process
  • The certificate is valid for 6 months
  • Book this early — it is required for the visa application and must be submitted with other documents

Post-Study: The Graduate Route Visa

After completing your UK degree, you can apply for the Graduate Route visa — a 2-year work visa (3 years for PhD graduates) that allows you to work in the UK without needing a job offer in hand at the time of application.

The Graduate Route requires:

  • Completion of an eligible UK degree from a licensed Student Sponsor
  • Valid Student visa at time of application
  • No new English test or financial requirement

This is a significant benefit — it allows Azerbaijani graduates to gain UK work experience before potentially transitioning to a Skilled Worker visa (which does require an employer sponsor and salary threshold).
