Studying in the UK requires English proficiency evidence that satisfies two separate standards: your university's own admission threshold, and the UK Home Office's immigration requirement. These are not the same test, the same score, or the same scoring system — and confusing them is one of the most common and costly mistakes international applicants make.
This guide explains both requirements clearly, covers every study level and visa route, and tells you exactly which IELTS test to sit and what score to target.
The Two IELTS Requirements for UK Study
| Requirement | Set By | Purpose | Test Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| University admission | Your university | Academic entry | IELTS Academic |
| Student visa | UK Home Office (UKVI) | Immigration | IELTS UKVI (Academic or General Training) |
The critical distinction: For your student visa, the UK Home Office requires a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). Standard IELTS Academic — the test taken in most test centres for university admission purposes — is not accepted for visa purposes unless it carries the UKVI approval.
You may need to take two separate IELTS tests: one for your university and one for your visa. Or you can take IELTS Academic UKVI, which satisfies both requirements simultaneously.
What Is IELTS UKVI?
IELTS UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is a version of IELTS that is approved by the UK Home Office as a Secure English Language Test (SELT). The content of the test is identical to standard IELTS — the difference is in how it is administered and verified.
| Feature | IELTS Academic (standard) | IELTS UKVI Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Test content | Same | Same |
| Accepted for university admission | Yes | Yes |
| Accepted for UK student visa | No (unless exempted) | Yes |
| Test centres | Broad global network | UKVI-approved centres only |
| Cost | Lower | Slightly higher |
| Results delivery | Via normal process | Results sent to UKVI and candidate |
If you are applying for a UK student visa, you must sit IELTS UKVI Academic (or another approved SELT) — not standard IELTS Academic.
Exception: Applicants from certain countries or those who studied previously at a UK institution may be exempt from the SELT requirement. See the exemptions section below.
UK Student Visa — Visa Route and Structure
The Student visa (formerly Tier 4 General) is the main route for international students aged 18+ studying at UK universities and colleges. A separate Child Student visa covers students aged 4–17.
| Visa | Age | For |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa | 18+ | University degrees, foundation courses, language courses of 6+ months |
| Child Student visa | 4–17 | Schools and colleges |
IELTS UKVI Score Requirements by Study Level
The UK Home Office (UKVI) sets minimum English proficiency levels using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). IELTS bands correspond to CEFR levels as follows:
| CEFR Level | IELTS Equivalent | Description |
|---|---|---|
| C2 | 8.5–9.0 | Mastery |
| C1 | 7.0–8.0 | Advanced |
| B2 | 5.5–6.5 | Upper Intermediate |
| B1 | 4.0–5.0 | Intermediate |
| A2 | 3.0–3.5 | Elementary |
UKVI IELTS Minimums by Study Level
| Study Level | CEFR Required | Min IELTS Overall | Min Per Skill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degree (bachelor's) | B2 | 5.5 | No skill below 5.5 |
| Pre-sessional English course | B2 | 5.5 | No skill below 5.5 |
| Foundation year | B2 | 5.5 | No skill below 5.5 |
| Postgraduate (master's) | B2 | 5.5 | No skill below 5.5 |
| Doctorate (PhD) | B2 | 5.5 | No skill below 5.5 |
| Below degree (HND, HNC, diploma) | B1 | 4.0 | No skill below 4.0 |
Important: These are the minimum UKVI immigration thresholds. Your university's admission requirement is almost always higher — and it is the university requirement, not the UKVI minimum, that determines what score you actually need.
University IELTS Requirements vs. UKVI Minimum
The UKVI B2 minimum (5.5 overall) is a baseline that universities typically exceed significantly. Here is how the two requirements compare:
| Requirement | Min IELTS | Per-Skill Min |
|---|---|---|
| UKVI Student visa (degree level) | 5.5 | 5.5 |
| Typical UK university (undergraduate) | 6.0–6.5 | 5.5–6.0 |
| Typical UK university (postgraduate) | 6.5–7.0 | 6.0–6.5 |
| Russell Group universities | 6.5–7.5 | 6.0–7.0 |
| Oxford / Cambridge | 7.0–7.5 | 7.0+ |
If you meet your university's admission IELTS requirement, you will in almost all cases exceed the UKVI visa minimum. The university requirement is the operative target for most applicants.

Professional Registration Requirements in the UK
For health and social care students, meeting university admission requirements is not enough. Professional regulatory bodies set their own IELTS standards for registration — and these must be met regardless of what your university accepted.
NMC — Nursing & Midwifery Council
| Skill | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.0 |
| Reading | 7.0 |
| Writing | 7.0 |
| Speaking | 7.0 |
| Overall | 7.0 |
Scores must be from a single sitting (no averaging across tests). The NMC accepts IELTS Academic UKVI or standard IELTS Academic.
GMC — General Medical Council (Doctors)
| Skill | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.5 |
| Reading | 7.5 |
| Writing | 7.5 |
| Speaking | 7.5 |
| Overall | 7.5 |
The GMC requires 7.5 in every individual skill — one of the strictest professional language requirements in the UK. A 7.5 overall with any single skill below 7.5 does not meet the GMC standard.
GDC — General Dental Council
| Skill | Minimum |
|---|---|
| All four skills | 7.0 |
| Overall | 7.0 |
HCPC — Health and Care Professions Council (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Radiography, Social Work, etc.)
| Skill | Minimum |
|---|---|
| All four skills | 7.0 |
| Overall | 7.0 |
GPhC — General Pharmaceutical Council
| Skill | Minimum |
|---|---|
| All four skills | 7.0 |
| Overall | 7.0 |
Teaching — DfE (Department for Education)
Teachers in England must meet the DfE English proficiency standard. For non-native English speakers applying for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS):
| Skill | Minimum |
|---|---|
| All four skills | 6.5 |
| Overall | 6.5 |
IELTS Academic vs. IELTS UKVI — Which to Sit
| Situation | Which Test |
|---|---|
| University admission only (no visa needed) | IELTS Academic (standard) |
| UK student visa application only | IELTS UKVI Academic or General Training |
| Both university admission and UK student visa | IELTS UKVI Academic (satisfies both) |
| UK work visa or settlement | IELTS UKVI General Training |
The simplest approach for most applicants: Sit IELTS UKVI Academic. It satisfies both the university admission requirement and the Home Office immigration requirement in a single test sitting.
Sitting standard IELTS Academic for your university application and then having to sit IELTS UKVI separately for your visa is a common, avoidable extra cost and delay.
IELTS Score Validity for UK Student Visa
| Purpose | Validity |
|---|---|
| UK Student visa application | 2 years from test date |
| University admission | 2 years (most institutions) |
| UK work visa (Skilled Worker) | 2 years |
Plan your test date to ensure your score is still valid when your visa application is submitted — not just when you apply to the university.
Exemptions from the SELT Requirement
Some applicants are exempt from the Secure English Language Test requirement for the UK student visa. You may be exempt if:
- You are a national of a majority English-speaking country (as defined by UKVI — includes Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, Ireland, and others)
- You have previously studied for an academic qualification taught in English in a majority English-speaking country within the last 5 years at degree level or above
- You are applying to study at degree level or above at a UK Higher Education Provider with Highly Trusted Sponsor status, AND the institution has assessed your English through its own processes
Note on the third exemption: Universities with Highly Trusted Sponsor status can vouch for applicants' English ability. In this case, the university's own IELTS requirement (standard Academic) may satisfy the visa need without IELTS UKVI. Check with your specific institution — not all HTS providers operate this waiver, and processes vary.
Approved SELTs for UK Student Visa (Alternatives to IELTS)
IELTS UKVI is the most widely used SELT, but the Home Office approves others:
| Test | Provider | Accepted For |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS UKVI Academic | British Council / IDP | Student visa, work visa |
| IELTS UKVI General Training | British Council / IDP | Work visa, below-degree study |
| Pearson PTE Academic UKVI | Pearson | Student visa |
| LanguageCert International ESOL SELT | LanguageCert | Student visa |
| Trinity College London GESE / ISE | Trinity | Student visa |
| Skills for English UKVI | PSI Services | Student visa (below degree) |
PTE Academic UKVI is a popular alternative — it is fully computer-based and delivers results in 48–72 hours.
Graduate Route Visa — Post-Study Work in the UK
After completing a degree in the UK, you may apply for the Graduate Route visa — a 2-year (3-year for PhD graduates) post-study work visa.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| English requirement for Graduate Route | None — no new language test required |
| You must have completed | A degree at a UK HEI on the Student visa |
| Duration | 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates) |
The Graduate Route does not require a new IELTS test. Your existing Student visa status is sufficient.
Skilled Worker Visa — Transitioning from Student to Work
If you want to remain in the UK for work after study on a Skilled Worker visa:
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| English level required | B1 (CEFR) |
| Min IELTS UKVI equivalent | 4.0 overall (no skill below 4.0) |
| Test required | IELTS UKVI General Training (or other approved SELT) |
| Alternative | Degree taught in English qualifies as English evidence in most cases |
Most university graduates are exempt from the Skilled Worker English requirement because their degree, taught in English, serves as evidence. Confirm with your employer's HR and the Home Office guidance for your specific situation.
Common Mistakes UK Student Visa Applicants Make
Sitting standard IELTS Academic instead of IELTS UKVI. This is the most frequent — and most expensive — mistake. Standard IELTS Academic scores cannot be used for the visa application. If you've already taken standard IELTS for your university offer, you still need to sit IELTS UKVI separately for the visa unless your university's HTS exemption applies.
Treating the UKVI minimum (5.5) as the target. The visa minimum is not the same as the university minimum. Your university requires 6.5 or 7.0 — that is the score you need. The 5.5 UKVI floor is a backstop, not a goal.
Missing per-skill minimums. Oxford requires no skill below 7.0 for most programmes. A 7.0 overall with a 6.5 Speaking will not satisfy the requirement, regardless of the overall average.
Not accounting for professional registration requirements. If you are studying Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, or Allied Health, your IELTS target is set by the GMC, NMC, GDC, or HCPC — not just your university. Plan for the higher of the two.
Not checking score validity timing. If your score expires before your visa application is processed, you will need to retake. Factor the 2-year validity period into your test booking timeline.
Assuming a previous UK degree exempts you. Exemptions are specific — they apply in defined circumstances. If you are uncertain, check the UKVI guidance directly or ask your university's international student office.
How to Prepare for UK University IELTS Targets
For 6.5 (most UK undergraduate entry):
Writing Task 2 and Speaking Part 3 are where most candidates fall short of 6.5. At this level, examiners want coherent argument development — not just grammatically correct sentences. Practise giving extended responses with reasons and examples.
For 7.0 (Russell Group postgraduate, LSE, Durham, Bath):
At 7.0, vocabulary precision matters significantly. Replace common words with accurate, context-appropriate alternatives. Writing at 7.0 requires not just correct grammar but varied and precise grammar — conditionals, relative clauses, and passive constructions used naturally.
For 7.5 (Oxford, Cambridge, GMC medical registration):
This level requires mastery of the band descriptors. In Writing, responses must demonstrate sophisticated argument structure and near-error-free grammar. In Speaking, extended responses must be natural, well-organised, and lexically rich without hesitation on vocabulary retrieval.
UK vs. Australia vs. Canada — Student Visa IELTS Comparison
| Country | Visa Minimum IELTS | Test Type Required | Standard University Min |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 5.5 (B2) | IELTS UKVI Academic | 6.0–7.5 |
| Australia | 6.0 (undergraduate) | IELTS Academic | 6.5–7.5 |
| Canada | No federal minimum | IELTS Academic or General Training | 6.0–7.0 |
| New Zealand | 5.5 | IELTS Academic | 6.0–6.5 |
The UK is unique in requiring a separate UKVI-approved test for visa purposes. Australia and Canada accept standard IELTS Academic for both university admission and visa/immigration purposes.
Your IELTS preparation should target the highest threshold that applies to your situation — university admission, visa, or professional registration — not the lowest. For most UK-bound applicants, that means 6.5–7.5 depending on programme and institution.
