University of Sydney IELTS Requirements (2026)

Gabble Team··8 min read

The University of Sydney is Australia's oldest and one of its most prestigious universities, consistently ranked in the global top 50. Sydney's eight faculties and multiple professional schools attract large numbers of international students, particularly from the Asia-Pacific region — making IELTS one of the most commonly submitted English language tests.

Does Sydney Accept IELTS?

Yes. The University of Sydney accepts IELTS Academic as its primary English language test. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, and Cambridge English qualifications are also accepted.

Key distinction: IELTS General Training is not accepted. Only IELTS Academic is valid for University of Sydney admissions.

AHPRA, NMBA, and AITSL Requirements

Several Band 3 requirements at Sydney are driven by regulatory bodies rather than institutional preference:

  • AHPRA (medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy): Requires 7.5 overall with each skill at least 7.0
  • NMBA (nursing and midwifery): Requires 7.5 overall with each skill at least 7.0 for Australian registration
  • AITSL (teaching): Requires 7.5 overall with each skill at least 7.0 for teacher registration

These thresholds are fixed by the relevant regulatory bodies. Sydney cannot waive them for applicants in these professions.

Minimum vs. Competitive at Sydney

Sydney's minimums are relatively accessible for a top-50 global university. Competitive scores among admitted students are:

  • MBBS / MD: 8.0+ is the typical submitted score, significantly above the 7.5 minimum
  • MBA: 7.5–8.0 among non-native speakers
  • LLM: 7.5–8.0
  • Engineering: 7.0 despite the 6.5 minimum

English Proficiency Waivers at Sydney

Sydney may grant exemptions for:

  • Applicants who completed a minimum of two years of study entirely in English at a recognised tertiary institution
  • Citizens of specified English-speaking countries
  • Applicants with qualifying secondary education completed in English

Note: regulatory body requirements (AHPRA, NMBA, AITSL) cannot be waived by the university — these must be met regardless of any academic exemption.

Score Validity at Sydney

IELTS scores are valid for two years. Sydney requires scores to be valid at the time of application and at enrolment.

Sydney's main intake is Semester 1 (February) and Semester 2 (July). Application deadlines typically fall 2–4 months before the start of semester.

Common Mistakes Sydney Applicants Make on IELTS

Applying to MBBS or MD with the general 6.5 minimum in mind. Both programmes require 7.5 — not 6.5. The per-skill requirement of 7.0 across all skills is also strictly enforced.

Per-skill violations for Band 3 programmes. A 7.5 overall with a 6.5 Writing fails the Band 3 requirement. All skills must be at least 7.0 for Medicine, MBA, LLM, Nursing, and MTeach.

Assuming professional registration exemptions. AHPRA and NMBA requirements cannot be waived by Sydney regardless of the applicant's prior qualifications or English background. These must be met.

Not checking the band level for your specific programme. Engineering (6.5) and Medicine (7.5) have very different requirements. Always verify the band level on your specific programme's admissions page.
