IELTS Speaking Part 2 gives you a cue card with a topic and three or four bullet points. You have one minute to prepare, then speak for one to two minutes. The examiner listens without interrupting — your job is to speak fluently, coherently, and with enough vocabulary range to demonstrate band 7+ ability.
This database covers 1000+ cue card topics organized by category, with follow-up questions for each section. Use it to practise systematically — work through categories relevant to your life, build topic-specific vocabulary, and time yourself hitting the full two minutes on each card.
How Cue Cards Are Scored
Your Part 2 response contributes to four criteria:
| Criterion | What Examiners Listen For |
|---|---|
| Fluency & Coherence | Sustained speech without long pauses; logical progression of ideas |
| Lexical Resource | Topic-specific vocabulary; collocations; avoiding word repetition |
| Grammatical Range | Mix of tenses, conditionals, relative clauses; not just simple sentences |
| Pronunciation | Clear delivery; natural stress and intonation |
Speaking for the full two minutes matters. Stopping at 90 seconds signals you've run out of ideas. The strategies in this guide help you extend responses naturally.
Universal Extension Techniques
Before the topic lists, these four techniques work on almost any cue card:
- Add a memory — "The reason this stands out is that it reminds me of..."
- Add a comparison — "What makes it different from similar ones is..."
- Add a consequence — "Since then, I've noticed that..."
- Add a recommendation — "I'd strongly suggest anyone interested in this to..."

Miscellaneous Final Topics (721–800)
721–800. One topic from each previous category revisited with a hypothetical framing: "Describe something you wish you had done / seen / experienced / learned / visited / read / created / said / bought / changed."
How to Structure Any Cue Card Answer
Use this framework for the full two minutes on any topic:
Minute 1 — The core (what, when, where, who) Open with a clear statement identifying your topic. Give the basic context quickly — do not spend more than 20 seconds on scene-setting.
Minute 1 (continued) — Description Use sensory and specific detail. Not "it was nice" but "the light in the early morning made the whole square look like it was made of copper." Specific language is the fastest route to Lexical Resource marks.
Minute 2 — Reflection and significance This is where most candidates cut short. Address: how you felt at the time, what changed as a result, what it means to you now, and what you would tell someone else about it. Each of these is 10–15 seconds of natural extension.
Closing sentence End deliberately — a single sentence that brings you back to the question. "That is why this [person / place / event] has remained so significant to me."

Common Part 2 Mistakes to Avoid
Stopping before two minutes. Practise extending until you can reliably fill the time — it is a skill, not a personality trait.
Reading the bullet points as a checklist. The bullets are prompts, not a script. Use them as a guide but speak naturally — the examiner notices mechanical delivery.
Using the same vocabulary for every card. "Good", "nice", "interesting", and "important" are the four words that cost you Lexical Resource marks. Replace them with precise alternatives each time.
Pausing at the start. Your one minute of preparation is for notes, not a full script. Jot three to four keywords, then speak from those — not from a written sentence.
Ignoring the question word. If the card asks you to describe someone you admire, you need to explain why you admire them — not just describe their appearance or background.
Use this database systematically. Work through one category per day, time yourself strictly, and record your responses to identify fluency gaps and vocabulary weaknesses. The examiner in Part 2 is not testing what you know — they are testing how fluently, coherently, and precisely you can speak about it.
