Per-Section Strategy for Edinburgh TOEFL

Band A (80): Focus on eliminating section-level weaknesses. A section score below 18 would likely indicate an overall below 80.

Band B (92): Target all sections at 22+. Writing and Speaking are the most commonly weak sections.

Band C (100): Target all sections at 24+. For Law LLM and PGDE, competitive scores require 25+ across all sections.

Score Validity at Edinburgh

TOEFL scores are valid for two years. Edinburgh requires scores valid at the time of application. Main intake is September with most deadlines running January to July.

Common Mistakes Edinburgh TOEFL Applicants Make

Applying to Law LLM with 92. The LLM requires Band C (100 iBT) — a 92 falls short.

Using the Sciences minimum for Humanities programmes. Band A (80) applies to Sciences and Engineering; Band B (92) applies to Arts, Social Sciences, and Business. Submitting 80 for an MA Humanities falls below Edinburgh's requirement.

Applying to PGDE with 92. GTCS registration requires Band C (100 iBT). A 92 will not be accepted for teacher training.
