TOEFL Score Validity — How Long Are TOEFL Scores Valid? (2026)

Gabble Team··3 min read

TOEFL scores have a defined validity period — and missing it is one of the most avoidable mistakes in the university application process. This guide covers everything you need to know about TOEFL score validity.

How Long Is TOEFL Valid?

Standard TOEFL iBT validity: 2 years from the test date.

This applies to all TOEFL iBT formats:

  • TOEFL iBT (test centre)
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition
  • TOEFL iBT Paper Edition

A score from 10 July 2024 is valid until 9 July 2026.

Planning Your Test Date Around Deadlines

Rule of thumb: Take TOEFL no earlier than 22 months before your intended programme start date.

Example scenario:

  • TOEFL taken: January 2025 → Valid until January 2027
  • US grad school deadline: December 2026 → Score valid ✅
  • US programme starts: September 2027 → Score expires January 2027, before enrolment

For programmes starting in Autumn 2027, take TOEFL no earlier than Autumn 2025.

What Happens When TOEFL Scores Expire?

If your TOEFL score expires before your application is reviewed:

  • Universities will reject your application or request a new score
  • Conditional offers may require a new valid score before enrolment
  • There is no grace period — an expired score is treated as no score

Can You Retake Before Your Score Expires?

Yes — there is no restriction on retaking TOEFL before your current score expires. You can have multiple valid scores. Universities typically ask you to submit your best single-sitting score (not MyBest) — so maintaining an older strong score while working toward a higher score on a retake is a valid strategy.
