There's no "failing" TOEFL — there's no pass/fail threshold built into the test. You receive a band score from 1.0 to 6.0 for each section (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) and an overall average, also 1.0–6.0. Whether that's "enough" depends entirely on what you need it for. This guide covers what to do if your score is below your target.
TOEFL Has No Pass or Fail — Just Band Scores
Every test-taker receives:
- An overall band score (1.0–6.0, in 0.5 increments) — the average of the four section scores
- Four section scores (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing), each 1.0–6.0
- During 2026–2028, the legacy 0–120 equivalent alongside the new band score
A 3.5 is not a "fail" — it simply reflects your current level. See our What Is a Good TOEFL Score guide for how different scores map to different goals.
If Your Score Is Below Your Target
Step 1: Identify Which Section(s) Are Holding You Back
Since each section is scored independently on the same 1.0–6.0 scale, it's usually clear where the gap is:
| Low Section | Likely Cause (2026 Format) | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | Weak performance on Write an Email (register/tone) or Write for an Academic Discussion (engagement, support) | Practise both task types separately — see our TOEFL vocabulary and phrases guide and grammar mistakes guide |
| Speaking | Listen and Repeat accuracy (pronunciation, memory under time pressure) or Take an Interview (hesitation, short answers) | Daily recorded practice on both task types — natural elaboration matters more than memorised templates |
| Reading | Struggling with adaptive routing — early errors push you toward an easier path capped at a lower band | Build consistent accuracy on early questions; work on Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage formats |
| Listening | Similar adaptive routing effect — Module 1 performance determines your difficulty path for Module 2 | Practise sustained focus across Conversation, Announcement, and Academic Talk formats |
Step 2: Consider a Score Review (Speaking/Writing Only)
If you believe your Speaking or Writing score doesn't reflect your performance, TOEFL offers a paid score review for these sections:
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Sections eligible | Speaking and/or Writing only (Reading and Listening are automated/adaptive and not eligible for re-marking) |
| Cost | Paid per section reviewed |
| Refund | Typically refunded if your score improves |
| Outcome | Score can go up, stay the same, or (rarely) decrease |
Step 3: Retake With Targeted Preparation
There's no limit on retakes — minimum wait is 3 days. See our TOEFL retake guide for full retake strategy, including how MyBest Scores can help.
Does a Low TOEFL Score Affect Future Applications?
Universities: you choose which score report to send — a low-scoring attempt doesn't automatically appear on future applications unless you send it. Note that MyBest Scores automatically combine your best section scores across attempts on official reports, which can work in your favour — see our MyBest Scores guide.
Immigration authorities: typically require the score(s) you choose to submit for your application — confirm specific disclosure requirements with the relevant authority, as policies vary.
Score Improvement Timeline (2026 Band Scale)
| Gap From Target | Realistic Preparation Time |
|---|---|
| 0.5 band below target | 2–4 weeks focused on the weakest section |
| 1.0 band below target | 4–8 weeks |
| 1.5 bands below target | 8–12 weeks |
| 2.0+ bands below target | 3–5 months, foundational work |
A Note on the Adaptive Sections
Because Reading and Listening are multi-stage adaptive in the 2026 format, a low score in either section can sometimes be traced to early-test performance: if your initial responses route you onto an easier path, that path is capped at a lower maximum band (around 4.0). If your Reading or Listening score feels disproportionately low compared to your actual level, focus your next attempt's preparation on accuracy in the first portion of each section — this is what determines your routing.
TOEFL Score Validity After a Low Score
Your TOEFL score is valid for 2 years from the test date — see our TOEFL Score Validity guide. If you retake, your validity clock resets from the new test date, giving you a full 2 years with the improved score.
